How Long Will My Treatment Last?
Unlike other chronic illnesses that require taking medications for life, treatment of hepatitis C is usually for a set period of time. The length of treatment varies based on the strain or genotype of the virus you have. If you have genotype 1 HCV, treatment typically lasts 48 weeks. For genotype 2 or 3 HCV, treatment is usually for 24 weeks.
Treatment may be stopped if your alpha interferon or alpha interferon-based therapy does not result in a virologic response at a certain point during the first 3 to 6 months of treatment. However, it is important to stay on treatment for as long as your doctor says you should, to fight the virus.
