The support you need to succeed on PEGASYS® (Peginterferon alfa-2a) therapy

Why Is Treatment Important?

All people with hepatitis C should be under the care of a doctor. Without treatment, hepatitis C can lead to even more serious health concerns:

  • Inflammation can hurt the liver's ability to store nutrients and remove toxins
  • Cirrhosis — a serious condition in which normal liver cells die and are replaced by scar tissue

Cirrhosis caused by hepatitis C also considerably increases the risk of developing liver cancer (hepatocellular carcinoma).

What can be done about hepatitis C?

Antiviral medications approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) can help reduce the amount of virus in the blood, with the goal of keeping your liver as healthy as possible.

Hepatitis C is treated with interferon, a substance the body makes routinely. When your body is fighting off an infection it makes even more interferon. It is a part of the immune system.

Peginterferon, the interferon used to treat hepatitis C, is slightly different from the kind your body makes. It is pegylated. This means it has a substance attached that helps it stay active in your body and fight the virus longer.

Peginterferon is often prescribed with ribavarin, another antiviral drug, because together they are even more effective against hepatitis C.
