Partnering with Your Doctor

Managing hepatitis C can be a complex undertaking. In the course of your treatment you will probably rely on the help of a number of different healthcare professionals. These may include your healthcare provider (usually a general practitioner or internist), a hepatologist (liver specialist), a gastroenterologist, different types of nurses, and a pharmacist.

You may also need the help of other specialists, such as a mental health professional. And you may rely more on different specialists at different times.

Here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • You need to have one "go-to" person.
This is someone who is able to coordinate all the moving parts of your treatment for hepatitis C. And understand how they all work together. For many people this person is their healthcare provider. It could also be a physician's assistant, nurse, or nurse practitioner. This is the person who knows you best and is able to fit your hepatitis C treatment into your total health picture
  • You need to be an equal partner in your care.
This means being knowledgeable about hepatitis C, its symptoms, and treatment. This way you can better communicate with your doctors about how the disease and your treatments are affecting you, so they can give you the care you need
  • You need to be an advocate for yourself.
All the people on your healthcare team have an interest in some part of your care. But you are one who has to live with it day in and day out. It is your responsibility to take an active role, ask questions, and make sure you are getting the best that your doctors have to offer you

How to be a better partner:

  1. Keep a diary of your symptoms, your medications, and how you are feeling. And bring it to your doctor visits.
  2. Chart your progress: Keep a record of your lab results. This can help you follow the results of your hepatitis C treatments and stay motivated. Download your Monthly Lab Results Tracker.
  3. Ask questions. Make a list the night before your doctor visit, and make time to ask them at your appointment.
