The support you need to succeed on PEGASYS® (Peginterferon alfa-2a) therapy

How Does PEGASYS Work?

PEGASYS is a pegylated interferon that is used to treat hepatitis C.

Interferon is a protein that your body is constantly making, and your body makes even more interferon when it tries to fight off an infection, such as a virus. You've experienced this if you've ever had the flu.

For some infections, such as hepatitis C, patients can inject more interferon into their bodies to help fight the virus. The interferon in a PEGASYS injection is slightly different from the interferon your body makes. It is pegylated. This means it has a substance attached that helps it stay active in your body and fight hepatitis C longer.

Through mechanisms we do not completely understand, PEGASYS works with your immune system to reduce or eliminate the amount of virus in your body.

Alpha interferons, including the form used in PEGASYS, have been known to cause a range of side effects. Continue reading for more information about PEGASYS.

PEGASYS may be used alone or in combination with COPEGUS® (Ribavirin, USP) to treat hepatitis C.
