The support you need to succeed on PEGASYS® (Peginterferon alfa-2a) therapy

PEGASYS and COPEGUS
Combination Therapy

For many people, PEGASYS works better when used in combination with COPEGUS® (Ribavirin, USP). COPEGUS is an antiviral medicine in tablet form that you take by mouth. Although COPEGUS cannot fight hepatitis C on its own, studies have shown that it does help alpha interferon in PEGASYS work better.

With PEGASYS and COPEGUS combination therapy, the hepatitis C virus can be decreased to a level so low that it cannot be measured by blood tests. Depending upon the strain (or genotype) of your hepatitis C virus it is decreased to the point it cannot be measured in 5 to 8 out of every 10 people who take PEGASYS and COPEGUS combination therapy for 6 months to 1 year. After 3 to 6 months of therapy, a blood test can help your healthcare professional determine your likelihood of long-term response.

Since all medications can cause side effects, it's possible that you could experience side effects while taking PEGASYS alone or in combination with COPEGUS.

COPEGUS can be extremely harmful and cause birth defects in an unborn baby. Female patients and the female partners of male patients should avoid getting pregnant. Ribavirin is known to cause anemia (low red blood cells), which can make heart disease worse. Also, ribavirin can harm your DNA and possibly cause cancer (see medication guide for more information and warnings). Tell your doctor right away if you or your partner becomes pregnant. You or your doctor should also call the Ribavirin Pregnancy Registry at 1-800-593-2214.

If you have any questions about your treatment, be sure to speak with your healthcare professional.
